Letters to my Friends

Travel Writing

This feels like a very nineteenth-century thing to say, but – due to the repeated requests of my friends – well, at least two friends – to write up an account of my travels and then to share it with them – since apparently it is not sufficient to simply send whatsapp messages with pictures of bowls and the caption, “look at this round friend!” – I have decided to begin blogging.

It is true that I travel a lot, and it is also true that I read a lot of books about the places where I travel, and therefore have many things to say about them. It is true that I am a former academic, and that the books I tend to read tend to be academic scholarship on history and culture and archaeology, and thus eminently suited to providing contextual information for the places I visit.

It is also true that I now have a soul-crushing admin job, and therefore these accounts will serve as a mental health support for me and as a reminder that thinking can still take place.

I hope you will find these informative and entertaining. If not, feel free to not tell me about it, and to find instead any of the many other online travel blogs that are out there. The world is wide enough, as they say.
